To Earth Day Network To the World Consultative Committee,

We, the University of Rojava with all the staff “administration, teachers, students” are very happy to participate in, teachers, students” are very happy to participate in the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of World Earth Day and we thank you for this kind invitation. Despite the difficult moments of imprisonment and the health state imposed on all humanity due to the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. Thank you once again for allowing us this important environmental event to express our feelings and convey our message and to share our experience with you on this occasion.
The disastrous effects caused by the rapid spread of this Coronavirus pandemic which crosses borders and which affects people without exception, forced us to close the doors of our university and prevented us from celebrating this day with all of you, we suspended all of our work and activities.
In the context of democratic confederalism in northern and eastern Syria, the University of Rojava was founded in 2016, located in Qamishlo. Our university adopts an alternative education system based particularly on a idea of building an ecological and moral society. Like to the other institutions of the Administration from bottom to top, our university’s mission is to strengthen ecological culture, mobilize and educate students to protect nature and respect the environment.
At the Syrian chaos, the 9 year war, the blockade, the lack of infrastructures and medical equipment in our region and the threats of the (ISIS) sleeper cells, in these conditions of instability and because of insecurity, the Administration was forced, as in other countries affected by the epidemic, to take strict measures to protect people.
The multiple plantar crises, climate change, the greed of man, the unlimited exploitation of nature, the race of industrial countries for the manufacture of weapons, the misuse of technology are putting the future of our planet in danger. Certainly that the current situation we are witnessing is a test for all of humanity. Quarantine is an opportunity to rethink everything and question our actions and our lifestyles so it’s a time for the earth to breathe and rest. Everything that is happening now is helpful lessons. It is urgent realize and understand that the world before Covid-19 will not look like the one after. Germany and Europe before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall were not the same. Against (ISIS) injustice and terrorism we fought an incredible battle, but this battle is not over, the spread of the Coronavirus resembles this dangerous radical ideology which caused the death of thousands of innocent people. In front of these plagues and these catastrophes, it is urgent to lead a collective fight and to take the historical responsibilities, to organize and help each other. The new critical situation demands solidarity and modesty in the face of selfishness and opportunism. It is time to mobilize all our efforts to save the earth, to make it greener and brighter, it is our duty the suffering mother earth.
To build a safer world, pressure must be supper powers to stop the war into world. We are all involved in this fight to protect of the planet. We find that the programs of educational institutions “schools and universities …” must give great importance to teaching an ecological culture and making everyday a day of the earth. Encourage awareness activities and cleaning campaigns, workshops, meetings between different movements and environmental organizations.
On this occasion, we would like to pay tribute the efforts of health personnel in all countries who struggle and watch day and night to save lives.
On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Earth Day, we wish you continued and prosperity for our planet.
